A good local walk - instead of turning right at the bottom of the hill into town, turn left up Sant Daniel valley.
Then take the first left past Sant Daniel Monastery. Five minutes further along, you'll see signs and white arrows pointing to "Sant Miguel" which is a small ruined castle with stunning views back over Girona and even out to sea. The climb is (mostly) not too arduous and took us nearly an hour and a half from doorstep to top (retrace steps to return).
Enjoyed wandering around Girona itself and found restaurants all good (and excellent value). The best aspect of the apartment for us was being able to lie in bed with the view through the open doors.
Thanks, Simon, for all the suggestions and recommendations.
